A heavy snowing that started falling the evening of Friday, Jan.30 and continued on the following day was unusual for a less-snowy weather of North Carolina. The amount of snow that fell during these two days varied in the central part of the state, with Orange and Durham counties receiving between 4 and 8 inches of snow. The official total at the Raleigh-Durham Airport was 5 inches.
Workers of the Department of Transportation began clearing roads Saturday, and the main clearing in major roadways was carried out Sunday. However, Monday morning Chapel Hill had 24 degrees temperature, which made the streets refreeze again. As a result, the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory until noon Monday because of icy conditions on roadways.
Officials urged people to avoid driving on Monday so that crews may continue to clear the snow and ice. Jason Holmes, an engineer with the NC DOT, said that there is still a great deal of work for road crews to break up the packed snow and ice. “It’s very difficult to get that to break loose from the pavement,” he said. “It could be several days before we get the interstates cleared up and go onto our secondary routes.”
